6 Ways to Tell if Leadership is Your Vocation

I can define the word “vocation” in many ways. Some are mundane. Others are theological, and some are mystical. My working definition of vocation is the one I got from a Jesuit priest half a century ago.

“You know something is your vocation if you’re willing to put up with all the scut work involved just so you have the opportunity to do it.”

Leadership is a noble calling. Here’s how you can tell if leadership could be your vocation.

Leadership Might Be for You If You Relish Accountability

No matter what you choose for a career, some things will go wrong. A few will go horribly wrong. If you’re willing to be accountable for the results of your decisions and actions, both good and bad, leadership could be your vocation.

Leadership Might be for You If You Love Learning

When you’re a leader, the opportunities for learning just keep on coming. If you want to be the best leader you can be, you’ll be learning about people and business and yourself for the rest of your life. If you love never-ending learning, leadership could be your vocation.

Leadership Might be for You If You Love Making A Difference in People’s Lives

When you’re a leader, what you say and do every day affects the lives of your teammates. You can make your team a great working environment. You can help people grow and develop. If you love to make a difference in people’s lives, leadership could be your vocation.

Leadership Might be for You If You Love Helping People Succeed

One of a leader’s key jobs is helping team members succeed. If you love that experience of helping someone else grow, leadership could be your vocation.

Leadership Might be for You If Vocation If You Love Being Part of a Winning Team

Helping the team succeed is one of a leader’s key jobs. If you love being part of a winning team, leadership gives you the opportunity to be the key driving force in team success. If you love being part of a winning team, leadership could be your vocation.

Leadership Might be for You If You Happily Share Credit

It’s one thing to take the blame when things go wrong, but there’s a huge temptation to take all the credit when things go right. If you happily share credit for success with others, leadership could be your vocation.

Bottom Line

There’s no way to know if leadership is for you unless you try it. But if the six statements in this post describe you, leadership could be your vocation.
