From the Independent Business Blogs: 9/14/22 post image

Independent business blogs are blogs that aren’t supported by an organization like a magazine, newspaper, company, or business school. Those people provide lots of great content, but they don’t need any additional exposure. In this post, every week, I bring you posts of quality from excellent bloggers that don’t get as much publicity.

This week, I’m pointing you to leadership posts by Scott Eblin, Ed Batista, Suzi McAlpine, Kate Nasser, and Frank Sonnenberg.

From Scott Eblin: How to Survive the Mad Dash to the End of the Year

“This post is publishing on the first work day after Labor Day Weekend 2022 so you know what that means. It’s the official start of the mad dash to the end of the year. Even if you already feel like you’re sprinting, there’s going to be a lot of pressure to pick up the pace to get stuff done before December 31.”

From Ed Batista: Negotiations and Symbolic Disputes

“A occasional theme in my practice is a client who’s perplexed by the obstinacy of their counterpart in a negotiation (which I use in the broadest possible sense, from formal talks to informal efforts to influence). Just when a deal seems imminent, the other party repeatedly introduces new terms or re-opens previously settled ones. Or a deal never seems imminent, with the prospect of a negotiated agreement constantly retreating before them, eventually disappearing over the horizon.”

From Suzi McAlpine: Sensemaking: What it is, why it’s important right now – and how you can get better at it

“Karl Weick is credited for introducing this concept and many authors – including Founder of the MIT Leadership Center, Deborah Ancona and David Snowden, who came up with the Cynefin framework – have contributed to the body of research on this crucial leadership skill.”

From Kate Nasser: Leadership Assumptions That Damage Tomorrow

“You can shift your leadership assumptions as you see what trouble they created. Yet leadership assumptions about people can leave irreversible damage. Here are three case studies to illustrate.”

From Frank Sonnenberg: How to Bring Out the Best in People

“One of the qualities of an exceptional friend or colleague is someone who helps you become the best you can be. If you want to serve as a positive influence in someone’s life, here are 15 guideposts to consider:”

How I Select Posts for this Midweek Review

The five posts I select to share in my Midweek Review of the Independent Business Blogs are picked from a regular review of about sixty blogs I check daily and an additional twenty-five or so that I check occasionally. Here’s how I select the posts you see in this review.

They must be published within the previous week.

They must support the purpose of the blog: to help leaders at all levels do a better job and lead a better life.

They must be from an independent business blog.

As a general rule, I only select posts that stand on their own, no selections from a series.

Also as a general rule, I do not select posts that are either a book review or a book report.

I reserve the right to make exceptions to the above.

Here, on Three Star Leadership, I post things that will help a boss at any level do a better job and live a better life. And, at my blog for part-time business book authors, I share tools and insights to help you write and publish a book you’ll be proud of.

The 347 tips in my ebook can help you Become a Better Boss One Tip at a Time.
