From the Independent Business Blogs: 7/15/20

Independent business blogs are blogs that aren’t supported by an organization like a magazine, newspaper, company, or business school. Those people provide lots of great content, but they don’t need any additional exposure. In this post, every week, I bring you posts of quality from excellent bloggers that don’t get as much publicity.

This week, I’m pointing you to posts by David Dye, Ed Batista, Kate Nasser, Scott Eblin, and Lolly Daskal.

From David Dye: We Are Each Other’s Destiny

“When Karin and I set out to write Courageous Cultures, we obviously had no idea how the world was about to change. It was clear that the nature of work was shifting and that to stay competitive, businesses would need every person to solve problems, contribute productive ideas, and improve life for their customers. But if the pandemic can remind us of anything, it’s that our future is one we will build together. Our interconnectedness fills the headlines every morning.”

From Ed Batista: Feedback Is Not a Gift

“‘Feedback is a gift.’ We’ve been told this over and over, as if it were gospel. I’ve even preached it myself. [1] But as I noted some years ago, I stopped using this phrase because it ‘fails to acknowledge how difficult the experience of receiving feedback can be. This can lead us to ignore our stress levels in feedback conversations, or, worse, feel required to tough it out even when we’re distressed past the point of effective learning.’ [2] Feedback is often stressful, confusing or unwelcome. Some gift.s

From Kate Nasser: What Powerless Feelings Do to Customers & Employees

“When I coach leaders and managers on addressing angry customers and upset employees, I remind them to find the powerless feelings. Then they ask me, what do you mean? Well simply put, when people feel powerless they often get angry, upset, and disgruntled. To make things better, understand where and why they feel powerless.”

From Scott Eblin: Loneliness is “a Mortal Threat”; Relationships are the Cure

“This week, I want to talk about relational routines; the ones that address our basic need for love and belonging and that also help keep us alive.”

From Lolly Daskal: Why You Need to Stop Pushing Yourself So Hard at Work

“Many of us don’t take the time to think about the toll that working so hard takes on us. But science tells us that overwork is damaging—that pushing yourself too hard comes with serious consequences for your physical and mental health.”

That’s it for this week’s selections from independent business blogs. If you liked this piece you may enjoy my curation posts on this blog. On Fridays you can wrap up your week with “Weekend Leadership Reading” consisting of choice articles on hot leadership topics culled from the business schools, the business press and major consulting firms.

How I Select Posts for this Midweek Review

The five posts I select to share in my Midweek Review of the Independent Business Blogs are picked from a regular review of about sixty blogs I check daily and an additional twenty-five or so that I check occasionally. Here’s how I select the posts you see in this review.

They must be published within the previous week.

They must support the purpose of the blog: to help leaders at all levels do a better job and lead a better life.

They must be from an independent business blog.

As a general rule, I only select posts that stand on their own, no selections from a series.

Also as a general rule, I do not select posts that are either a book review or a book report.

I reserve the right to make exceptions to the above.

Here, on Three Star Leadership, I post things that will help a boss at any level do a better job and live a better life. And, at my blog for part-time business book authors, I share tools and insights to help you write and publish a book you’ll be proud of.

The 347 tips in my ebook can help you Become a Better Boss One Tip at a Time.
