From the Independent Business Blogs: 5/29/19

Independent business blogs are blogs that aren’t supported by an organization like a magazine, newspaper, company, or business school. Those people provide lots of great content, but they don’t need any additional exposure. In this post, every week, I bring you posts of quality from excellent bloggers that don’t get as much publicity.

This week, I’m pointing you to posts by Lolly Daskal, Terry “Starbucker” St. Marie, Steve Keating, Karin Hurt, and Ed Batista,

From Lolly Daskal: 7 Ways to Get the Most Out of a Leadership Coach

“A coaching relationship can be challenging, and even difficult at times, but the payoff is great. Virtually every successful person—not only in business but in sports, politics, entertainment and a host of other fields—has had the benefit of some form of coaching. When you’re ready to get started, here are seven ways to ensure you get the most of your leadership coach.”

From Terry “Starbucker” St. Marie: Sage Advice For The First-Time Leader

“And in my early work life, I watched closely what my supervisors were doing and saying and tried to pick up pointers from them. So when I got my big opportunity, I thought I had just about every tool I needed to go out into the big old world, make my mark, and lead like I’d been doing it for years. Well, turns out, I was (very) wrong. I had only begun to scratch the surface of what leadership was all about.”

Wally’s Comment:  If you’re a first-time leader, please check out my ebook, “Now You’re the Boss: Making the most of the most important transition in business.

From Steve Keating: The Art of Leadership

“It’s not that way with leadership. Managing is about things. Leadership is about people. When you manage a budget you input the numbers with a high degree of certainty that 2 plus 2 will equal 4. (Yes, I understand this may not be true if you work in government) When you lead people you can put 2 people in the same room, give them identical directions on preforming the identical task and get 2 drastically different results.”

From Karin Hurt: One Surprising Secret to Being Respected as an Expert

“I was having dinner with a group of senior leaders after a strategic executive offsite. So naturally, the conversation turned to … octopus hunting. Apparently, Carlos, the senior leader sitting across from me was an expert.”

From Ed Batista: Weather Systems (Power, Charisma and Leadership)

“Powerful, charismatic leaders are like weather systems. They change the atmosphere, and people around them adjust accordingly. In many cases a leader’s charisma played a role in enabling them to achieve a powerful position in the first place–and in most cases the trappings and rewards that accompany leadership roles contribute to an environment that enhances their power. Some of this is deliberate and intentional, but that doesn’t mean it’s inauthentic or should be characterized as manipulative.”

That’s it for this week’s selections from independent business blogs. If you liked this piece you may enjoy my curation posts on this blog. Every Tuesday, “Leaders and Strategies in Real Life” helps you learn about leadership by studying what real leaders do. On Fridays you can wrap up your week with “Weekend Leadership Reading” consisting of choice articles on hot leadership topics culled from the business schools, the business press and major consulting firms.

How I Select Posts for this Midweek Review

The five posts I select to share in my Midweek Review of the Independent Business Blogs are picked from a regular review of about sixty blogs I check daily and an additional twenty-five or so that I check occasionally. Here’s how I select the posts you see in this review.

They must be published within the previous week.

They must support the purpose of the blog: to help leaders at all levels do a better job and lead a better life.

They must be from an independent business blog.

As a general rule, I only select posts that stand on their own, no selections from a series.

Also as a general rule, I do not select posts that are either a book review or a book report.

I reserve the right to make exceptions to the above.

Here, on Three Star Leadership, I post things that will help a boss at any level do a better job and live a better life. At the The 360 Degree Feedback blog, I join other bloggers with posts on leadership development. And, at Wally Bock’s Writing Edge, I share tools and insights to help you write better.

The 347 tips in my ebook can help you Become a Better Boss One Tip at a Time.

That octopus hunter story is incredible, Wally. A great find. I’m going to remember that one.

All credit to Karin Hurt for sharing that story. Her blog is a treasure trove of stuff like that.
