From the Independent Business Blogs: 11/21/18

Independent business blogs are blogs that aren’t supported by an organization like a magazine, newspaper, company, or business school. Those people provide lots of great content, but they don’t need any additional exposure. In this post, every week, I bring you posts of quality from excellent bloggers that don’t get as much publicity.

This week, I’m pointing you to posts by Alli Polin, Michael Bungay Stanier, Steve Keating, Art Petty, and Kate Nasser.

From Alli Polin: What Do You Do When Life is Disappointing?

“Few things are all or nothing and life, as you well know, is a mixed bag. It’s a little like being on a teeter-totter. Did you go on one when you were a kid? It’s a long board balanced on a fulcrum. Someone sits opposite you, and you take turns going up and down. When you hit the bottom, you use your legs to propel yourself back up. Maybe sometimes you balance in the middle, hanging there, enjoying the feeling but more often than not, you’re in motion.”

From Michael Bungay Stanier: Three Unexpected Reasons Why People Don’t Ask Questions

“There was one assertion, however, that had me shaking my fist at the sky: ‘Most people just don’t understand how beneficial good questioning can be. If they did, they would end far fewer sentences with a period — and more with a question mark.’ To me, that’s a little along the lines of asserting: ‘Most people don’t understand how beneficial exercising regularly can be. If they did, more people would be working out and not just staying at home and getting päntsdrunk.'”

From Steve Keating: What Are You Working On?

“I think most people, well hopefully not most but too many for sure, never stop long enough to ask themselves if what they are doing is important. They never stop long enough to consider if and how their work matters. They don’t wonder if they stopped doing what they are doing if they and their work would be missed by anyone.”

From Art Petty: Make Time to Think Deeply

“Every Thursday for a few hours between coaching calls, I do something critically important to my mental well-being. I grab a book from my inventory of unread books and a stack of fresh index cards and head over to our local library for a few hours. And then I think. (When I write out the index cards, I think deeply about the idea I’m capturing and how I might apply it.)”

From Kate Nasser: Leadership Gratitude: Give Employees These Heartfelt Thanks

“Leaders, show your leadership gratitude to those you lead. Give employees these heartfelt thanks. It builds morale, team spirit, and increases performance.”

That’s it for this week’s selections from independent business blogs. If you liked this piece you may enjoy my curation posts on this blog. Every Tuesday, “Leaders and Strategies in Real Life” helps you learn about leadership by studying what real leaders do. On Fridays you can wrap up your week with “Weekend Leadership Reading” consisting of choice articles on hot leadership topics culled from the business schools, the business press and major consulting firms.

How I Select Posts for this Midweek Review

The five posts I select to share in my Midweek Review of the Independent Business Blogs are picked from a regular review of about sixty blogs I check daily and an additional twenty-five or so that I check occasionally. Here’s how I select the posts you see in this review.

They must be published within the previous week.

They must support the purpose of the blog: to help leaders at all levels do a better job and lead a better life.

They must be from an independent business blog.

As a general rule, I only select posts that stand on their own, no selections from a series.

Also as a general rule, I do not select posts that are either a book review or a book report.

I reserve the right to make exceptions to the above.

Here, on Three Star Leadership, I post things that will help a boss at any level do a better job and live a better life. At the The 360 Degree Feedback blog, I join other bloggers with posts on leadership development. And, at Wally Bock’s Writing Edge, I share tools and insights to help you write better.

The 347 tips in my ebook can help you Become a Better Boss One Tip at a Time.

I love this concept. I am a Sydney based organisational psychologist, and excutive coach and I infrequently blog about leadership and motivation. It would be great to connect. Kind regards Tamar Balkin
