Leaders and Strategies in Real Life: 7/2/19

Instead of studying leadership, why not spend some time studying leaders and strategies in the wild? You can learn a lot from leadership experts, but you always see the leader and what he or she does through the expert’s personal lens. Supplement that learning with studying real leaders in real life situations and draw your own conclusions. The posts in this series will help you.

Every week I’ll point you to articles by and about real leaders in real situations and to articles about how real companies are faring in the marketplace. Read them. Think about them. Draw your own lessons and conclusions from them. Then try to apply those lessons in your own real life.

This week I’m pointing you to articles about Hubert Joly, Steven Mendel, Steve Bandrowczak, Ron Williams, and Nina Vaca.

From Nathaniel Meyersohn: How Best Buy’s outgoing CEO, Hubert Joly, rescued the company

“For nearly seven years, Best Buy chief executive Hubert Joly gave a master class on how old school retailers can thrive in the online shopping era.”

From Nick Mickshik : Changemakers: Steven Mendel

“What do you do when your insurance is prohibitively expensive? Start your own insurance company, of course.”

From Gabriel Perna: Xerox President On Transforming A 113-Year-Old Company

“There is a big difference between understanding a technology’s functions and understanding a technology’s business purpose. No one appreciates that more than Xerox President and Chief Operations Officer Steve Bandrowczak, who has taken on number of high-level IT and general management positions throughout his career.”

From Ron Williams: Former Aetna CEO: The Executive Assistant Is An Undertold Story

“This story reminded me of an often-overlooked reality—that without the help of talented, dedicated EAs, many of the world’s most successful business leaders would be toast!”

From Samantha Marshall: Diversifying the high-tech talent pool

“Pinnacle Group CEO Nina Vaca’s top priorities are to keep growing fast and expand the talent pipeline.”
