Leaders and Strategies in Real Life: 1/9/18

Instead of studying leadership, why not spend some time studying leaders and strategies in the wild? You can learn a lot from leadership experts, but you always see the leader and what he or she does through the expert’s personal lens. Supplement that learning with studying real leaders in real life situations and draw your own conclusions. The posts in this series will help you.

Every week I’ll point you to articles by and about real leaders in real situations and to articles about how real companies are faring in the marketplace. Read them. Think about them. Draw your own lessons and conclusions from them. Then try to apply those lessons in your own real life.

This week I’m pointing you to articles about Doug Hammond, Jamey Edwards, Dan Gilbert, Elena Bajic, and Mark Zuckerberg.

From Patrick Gorman: CEO Doug Hammond Puts People First At NFP

“For NFP chairman and CEO Doug Hammond, developing and maintaining a healthy company culture and community are key. Under his leadership, the insurance brokerage and consulting company has focused on fostering a people-centric workplace through its PeopleFirst program, which provides NFP employees with opportunities for education, recognition, community service, financial strength and well-being.”

From Ronald D. White: He’s building virtual roads to wellness

“Jamey Edwards, 43, is chief executive of Cloudbreak Health. The 450-employee El Segundo company is a leader in telemedicine, an industry that is expected to grow 16% annually through at least 2025 to $78 billion, according to the firm Research & Markets. At a rate of about 70,000 times a month, Cloudbreak’s private broadband network connects doctors and patients accessing care through 700 hospitals nationwide for consultation, diagnosis and interpreting in more than 250 languages.”

From Laura J. Keller: Dan Gilbert’s Quicken Takes On Big Tech After Beating the Banks

“Billionaire Dan Gilbert’s Quicken Loans Inc. outgrew almost every U.S. mortgage provider by unfurling technology like its online Rocket Mortgage platform faster than big banks. Now closing in on the industry’s leader, Wells Fargo & Co., he’s picking more fights: Luring top tech talent to Detroit from Silicon Valley giants like Facebook Inc. and Google”

From Elena Bajic: Why Communicating Vision is the Single Most Important Thing You Can Do

“While the vision for Ivy Exec is mine, I cannot make it a reality on my own. I need the understanding, buy-in, and the enthusiasm of my team to work together collectively to take the company forward, and everybody’s favorite word, ‘scale.'”

From Mahita Gajanan: Fixing Facebook Is Mark Zuckerberg’s Personal Challenge for 2018

“The Facebook CEO said Thursday that his New Year’s resolution is to take on fixing the host of problems his company has encountered in the last year, from abusers targeting others on the platform to false information continuing to go viral.”

What People Are Saying

Very nice blog shared by you i just want to add a little bit (Network matter) I’m always surprised at how often people who feel they have been aggrieved “go nuclear” in a public way. Doing this threatens your network in ways that are hard to predict. You don’t know who will say what to whom. Often, those that take this tack wrap themselves in a cloak of honor, explaining that they had to say what they said; and anyway, it’s their right.

Yes, it is their right, but that doesn’t make it a good thing. Thanks for adding to the discussion.
