Mentoring

I haven't been able to discover a book about how to find and choose a mentor that is aimed at a new manager. There seem to be quite a few "find a mentor" resources for women and for people who are starting a business and an Amazon search should turn them up. There are some resources on the web that may be helpful.

"Seven Tips for Finding a Great Mentor" is an excellent short article on the topic.

I also recommend the article from CareerJournal.com called "Why Finding a Mentor is Only the Beginning."

There are formal mentoring programs at many companies. There are also "matchmaking" services that promise to set you up with a mentor. I suggest these only as a last resort. The best mentoring relationships appear to happen outside of formal program structures.

Here my answers to some questions that visitors have asked about mentoring.

What are the steps to finding a mentor?
What does a good mentoring relationship require?
How do you get the most out of your mentoring experience?
