From the Independent Business Blogs: 7/12/17

Independent business blogs are blogs that aren’t supported by an organization like a magazine, newspaper, company, or business school. Those people provide lots of great content, but they don’t need any additional exposure. In this post, every week, I bring you posts of quality from excellent bloggers that don’t get as much publicity.

This week, I’m pointing you to posts by Jesse Lyn Stoner, Kate Nasser, Steve Keating, Kevin Eikenberry, and Karin Hurt.

From Jesse Lyn Stoner: Team Alignment Is For the Birds!

“Do an Internet search for team alignment and you’ll find plenty of articles – why your team needs to be aligned for superior performance, how to align your team, and what alignment looks like. And you’ll see images like these to depict high performance teams.”

From Kate Nasser: Compelling Reasons to Be Authentic Not Rude

“As I see people being rude and calling it authenticity, I am compelled to share the compelling reasons to be authentic without being rude. Relationships are easily broken; take care of them!”

From Steve Keating: The Need for Feedback

“Some people want feedback on their performance and some people don’t. But if you’re a leader you need to understand this basic fact: ALL people NEED feedback. At least if their performance is going to improve in any significant way.”

From Kevin Eikenberry: How to Respond to “We’ve Tried That Before”

“As human beings, change is all around us; and as human beings, we resist change. Sometimes that resistance is momentary, sometimes it lasts for a lifetime. To be more effective leaders, we must understand the dynamics of change, why people (including ourselves) resist, and how to overcome that resistance. One of the most common statements you will hear about any change is: ‘We’ve tried that before.’”

From Karin Hurt: How to Motivate Yourself When You’re Exhausted

“You’ve been working long hours, fighting the political and logistical battles to do what’s right for the business–and just as you think everything’s on track, the landscape changes… a merger, a reorganization, reduced funding… and you feel like you’re starting all over again.”

That’s it for this week’s selections from independent business blogs. If you liked this piece you may enjoy my regular post on “Leadership Reading to Start Your Week” points you to choice articles from the business schools, the business press and major consulting firms about strategy, innovation, women and the workplace, and work now and in the future. Highlights from the last issue include Netflix answer to competing with Amazon, organisation design based on science, not superstition, how to act like the leader you want to be, seven secrets of successful innovation, serious AI challenges that require our attention, four types of innovation and the problems they solve, three reasons to recruit and select more female leaders, and five workplace changes that will impact every organization.

How I Select Posts for this Midweek Review

The five posts I select to share in my Midweek Review of the Independent Business Blogs are picked from a regular review of about sixty blogs I check daily and an additional twenty-five or so that I check occasionally. Here’s how I select the posts you see in this review.

They must be published within the previous week.

They must support the purpose of the blog: to help leaders at all levels do a better job and lead a better life.

They must be from an independent business blog.

As a general rule, I only select posts that stand on their own, no selections from a series.

Also as a general rule, I do not select posts that are either a book review or a book report.

I reserve the right to make exceptions to the above.

Here, on Three Star Leadership, I post things that will help a boss at any level do a better job and live a better life. At the The 360 Degree Feedback blog, I join other bloggers with posts on leadership development. And, at Wally Bock’s Writing Edge, I share tools and insights to help you write better.
